Catalina Island Marine Institute Field Trip

(Toyon Bay)



Your son/daughter has the opportunity to participate in the Catalina Island Marine Institute program on Catalina Island for three days (Friday May 12th   to Sunday May 14, 2017).  This is an exciting and motivational program, which allows students to engage in science first hand through snorkeling, and marine labs. 

Forty-five students from OPMS, two teachers and four chaperones will be attending.  The cost will be approximately $305, which covers round trip transportation from OPMS to Catalina, housing, meals, program instructors and all necessary equipment for each program.


          The bus will leave from the front of OPMS promptly at 6:00 a.m. Friday,

May 12th   in order to assure our arrival in Long Beach by 8:30 a.m.  The group will return around 4 p.m. Sunday, May 14th to Ramona.


Weather conditions may require the rescheduling of the trip, or under extreme conditions an additional fee may be needed to pay for a return bus trip if the trip is rescheduled at the last minute because weather conditions prevent the ferry from leaving Long Beach on the morning of departure. This has never happened, but is a possibility.


  • Due to the popularity of the trip we will be holding a lottery at the beginning of lunch in room S-4 on Friday September 9th to select students. 


  • If your student is interested in attending the field trip please send a non-refundable deposit of $50.00 on Friday September 9th.


  • Only students selected in the lottery will turn in their deposit,


  • Non-selected students will keep their deposit and will be added to the wait list.


If your student is selected, then their deposit will be taken. Students are ineligible if they have D’s F's, N's or U's on their report cards for the first three quarters, or are on the Choices List.  If your student must cancel due to personal reasons, grades or citizenship requirements your deposit cannot be refunded. 


Please, if you have a change of plans and your student will not be attending the Catalina trip let Mr. Reynolds know as soon as possible so another student on the wait list can be offered this exciting trip.  The remaining payment of approximately $255 will be due the 1st week of April.


  • If you are sending a check please make checks payable to OPMS.

    Please print your child’s first and last name in the memo section of your check.


  • Remind your student to go to room S-4 at the beginning of lunch on Friday September 9th.


If your student is selected and you would like to experience this adventure as a chaperone, have your student pick up a chaperone handout in room
4. Chaperones pay full price, but it is an exciting excursion that you will enjoy.
